Bamboo crafters and furniture makers improve product

KORONADAL CITY--Thirty bamboo crafters and furniture makers gathered to improve bamboo-based products as the Province of South Cotabato celebrates 2011 Kawayan Festival.

From February 15-21, 2011, bamboo furniture makers showcased their skills on making bamboo furnitures through a “Living Showcase” competition cum product improvement mechanism. The products were displayed at the ProTech Center, Koronadal City South Cotabato. On the other hand, on February 16-18, 2011 some micro-entrepreneurs participated in the Provincial Bamboo Forum and Industry Planning Workshop at Fred Anne’s Food Haus, Koronadal City. The activity crafted the five year development plan of Bamboo industry in the Province of South Cotabato.

Meanwhile, a Training-workshop on Bamboo Novelty (Treatment, Finishing Techniques, and New Trends) was facilitated by the Cottage Industry Technology Center on March 1-3, 2011. As a post-Kawayan Festival Activity, this was supported by the Department of Science and Technology, ProTech Center and DTI-SC-RuMEPP.

In a message during the training, Governor Pingoy challenged the crafters to improve their products that will compete with other markets. PD Flora Gabunales of the DTI on the other hand affirms the commitment of RuMEPP in South Cotabato to develop the potentials of the bamboo industry in the Province
